The Mixed Extracts in HemoHIM Including Angelica Gigas = Supports Immune Function!

"The Mixed Extracts in HemoHIM Including Angelica Gigas" is a plant-based complex developed from Angelica Gigas, Cnidium Officinale, Paeonia Japonica, and other herbs. In 2006, it became the first ingredient to be individually recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as a health functional food ingredient that supports immune function.

As of August 2024, HemoHIM mixed extracts have secured 26 domestic and international patents and have been featured in 38 research papers, including 21 in SCIE-indexed journals. Its strong reputation comes from proven efficacy in supporting immunity, validated through these extensive studies and publications.

HemoHIM Mixed Extracts:
First Dual-Function Recognition for Immunity and Fatigue

Another important functionality has been added to the Mixed Extracts in HemoHIM Including Angelica Gigas: fatigue improvement. To ensure the sustainability of HemoHIM mixed extracts and secure their value chain, efforts have been made to expand intellectual property rights through research publications and patent registrations concerning effects on stomach health, liver health, muscle strength, and cognitive function.
As one such achievement, in September 2023, the Mixed Extracts in HemoHIM Including Angelica Gigas received official recognition from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) for its fatigue-reducing functionality. This makes it the first individually approved ingredient to secure dual functionality: improving immune function and reducing fatigue. This milestone came six years after launching the Project to Develop Technology for Long-Lasting HemoHIM in 2017.

The combination of immune support and fatigue reduction in HemoHIM mixed extracts did not happen by chance. The antioxidation mechanism, which plays a key role in both fatigue accumulation and immune function, provides a solid scientific basis for these effects. Antioxidation refers to the inhibition of oxidation, a process frequently discussed in the context of cellular aging and anti-aging.

Excessive Free Radicals and Oxidative Stress

Oxygen is essential for producing the energy our bodies need, but when it is present in excess, it can form harmful molecules called free radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS). These molecules are highly reactive and can damage cells if not properly balanced.
Free radicals are generated not only during normal metabolism but also when we digest foods like meat, processed foods, or fast food. Physically demanding work, immune responses to pathogens, stress, and fatigue can also increase free radical production. Environmental factors such as ultraviolet rays, radiation, smoking, pollution, intense exercise, overeating, and instant foods further contribute to their formation.

The danger of free radicals lies in their high reactivity—they can easily trigger oxidative reactions with proteins, DNA, and other cellular components. When the body cannot eliminate free radicals as fast as they are produced, oxidative stress occurs. This can lead to inflammation, damaged proteins, and cellular or tissue injury. In severe cases, cells may die or grow abnormally, increasing the risk of tumors.
In simple terms, oxidative stress accelerates aging, contributes to disease, and weakens the immune system. Antioxidants help prevent these effects by neutralizing free radicals, protecting cells from damage, and slowing cellular aging.

Antioxidant Mechanism Discovered in the Mixed Extracts in HemoHIM Including Angelica Gigas: Scientifically Proven for Fatigue Improvement

The Mixed Extracts in HemoHIM Including Angelica Gigas was recognized for its dual functionality—supporting immune function and reducing fatigue—thanks to scientific evidence demonstrating its antioxidant effects in the body. Numerous studies have shown that the Mixed Extracts not only enhances immune function by activating NK cells, boosting cytokine production from T cells, and promoting immune cell recovery, but also helps reduce fatigue through its antioxidant effects.

Recently, Kolmar BNH focused specifically on fatigue improvement in the study that led to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s dual functional recognition of the Mixed Extracts in HemoHIM. Their research successfully demonstrated this effect and resulted in the publication of three SCIE-indexed papers confirming significant efficacy in both clinical trials (human studies) and non-clinical trials (cell experiments).
These clinical and non-clinical trials of the Mixed Extracts in HemoHIM showed significant improvements in the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI) among healthy adults aged 30 to 59 who reported fatigue.

These study results were published in the 2022 international journal Phytomedicine Plus under the title “Effect of herbal preparation HemoHIM on fatigue level and exercise performance: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, and parallel clinical trial.” They have been patented not only in South Korea but also in Russia and the United States.
In addition, non-clinical studies demonstrated significant anti-fatigue effects in both a fatigue-inducing model (Antioxidant and antifatigue effect of a standardized fraction (HemoHIM) from Angelica gigas, Cnidium officinale, and Paeonia lactiflora, Pharmaceutical Biology, 2021) and an aging model (Antioxidant and Anti-Fatigue Effects of a Standardized Botanical Extract Fraction (HemoHIM) in Forced-Exercised Aged Mice, Journal of Medicinal Food, 2024). All of these findings were published in SCIE-indexed journals, providing strong scientific evidence of HemoHIM’s efficacy in improving fatigue.
